The Legend That Almost Wasn't: Porsche 911's Naming Twist

Porsche's iconic sports car almost went by a different moniker.

The Porsche 911 stands as one of the most iconic and enduring sports cars in automotive history. Over seven decades, Porsche has sold more than a million units across various configurations, with over 70% still road-ready today. Revered for its engineering and racing pedigree, the 911 has claimed more than half of Porsche’s 30,000 race victories.

Interestingly, the 911 was originally named the Porsche 901. Just before its 1963 debut, a legal challenge from Peugeot—who held rights to three-digit car names with a zero in the middle—prompted Porsche to rename it. Thus, the legendary 911 was born not just from innovation, but from a well-timed pivot.

No matter what it's called, the 911 remains an enduring icon of the sports car world.
